Cusco  is a city in southeastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range. It is the capital of the Cusco Region as well as the Cusco Province.

Cusco was the site of the historic capital of the
Inca Empire and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO. It is a major tourist destination and receives almost 1.5 million visitors a year.

Cusco has a diversity of tourist services, a lot of hotels and hostels, as well as travel agencies and adventure sports, restaurants, handmade shopping centres, bars and all that you can imagine. The tourist industry influences the development of the products and services.

Plan to spend at least three days in and around Cusco before any serious trekking such as the Inca Trail or Laos Trail to Machu Picchu.

Locate at 3360 metres above sea level, travellers will immediatley notice the thin clear mountain air, a result of the City's high altitude.  The first day in particular should be spend relaxing and enjoying the shops as you gently allow your body to acclimatize.

This is an ideal opportunity to see the highlights Cusco has to offer such as a tour of the City, the nearby Inca Ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Qenko, Pucapucara and Tambomachay and the Sacred Vally of the Incas including a visit to the traditional Indian market at Pisac, the beautiful village of Ollantaytambo and the small village of Chinchero located high up in the mountains.
